What is a Big Hairy Audacious Goal?

A BHAG is made to motivate us to do something really big and important. In UX design, a BHAG could be a goal like changing the way people use technology, or making a product that really improves people's lives. BHAGs help teams concentrate on their work and aim for big changes, not just small steps.

I found this article on risely explaining in detail with examples to make me understand the term a bit better, here are three pieces of information i took from this article:

  1. BHAG Explained: The idea of a BHAG comes from a book by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras called "Built to Last." It's a big, bold goal that a company aims for in the long run. It helps guide the company, like a "north star."
  2. BHAGs Types: There are four kinds of BHAGs. These are target-oriented, competitive, role model, and internal transformation. Each kind helps with different strategic goals. These goals can be to do better than competitors, copy industry leaders, or change the company from the inside.
  3. Simple Example: President Kennedy's 1961 promise to send a man to the moon and bring him back safely before 1970 is a good example of a big goal. It shows how a big goal can motivate a whole country to do something that seems impossible.
