Object attachment as we grow older
This article helped me understand how people can form emotional connections with objects over time. The article explains that objects can become meaningful because they are linked to memories, people, identity and life events. One point I found useful was that in a study of middle-aged and older adults, with a age of 64, emotional significance was linked to difficulty discarding items. This is related strongly to my Memori project because my app is based around the idea that objects are not always valuable because of what they are, but because of the memories and stories attached to them.
This helped me realise that Memori needed to focus on more than just scanning items. It needed to help users save the story behind the object, especially if it belonged to someone important or reminded them of a specific moment. The research supported my idea of creating a digital memory box, as it showed that sentimental items can provide comfort and connection, especially as people get older or experience loss.
