For my illustrations for my music app I wanted it to be fun, simple and graphic. I wanted to base my illustrations on music and emotion as thats the main concept for my app. I was unsure if I wanted to use people or make it more playful by using animals. I decided for the animals.

My illustration journey

I tried out my original idea using night and day in the background of my app but something didn’t feel right about it, It felt too much and I wanted my music app to feel uncluttered.

Things that didn’t work

Moving on I looked on Pinterest and found these doodles of cats, I wanted to use humans but after seeing these cute doodles I knew my idea was sealed which would be emotional animals.

I quickly sketched out a rough idea of what style i was going for but it felt too chaotic.

This was my final attempt using the messy doodle style and I just couldn’t get the illustration to look the way I imagined it to look like in my head.

Going forward I knew I couldn’t achieve this messy grunge style for my app so I decided to look into something that looked clean and simple. I found these hedgehog doodle that matched my theme but weren’t in the correct style or colour choice I wanted. Looking back at what we did in class with master apprentice I decided to channel that into my illustrations as I knew It would take up too much of my time to have a set of my own thought out illustrations.

Illustrating digitally

I went into procreate and drew out the images adjusting areas that I wanted to change such as colour and line thickness. I used a singular colour palette for each hedgehog adjusting the tone to a lighter or darker shade for contrast. I am extremely happy with my hedgehogs and although some of them aren’t my favourite such as the sleeping illustration they are all quite consistent which I am pleased with.

Reflection

Overall I really enjoyed this area of the project. I didn’t need to illustrate but I wanted to be creative for this project and it only took a few hours out if my day to draw my illustrations. The idea behind it is they weren’t meant to appear perfect but more like a sketch. I look forward to adding them into my music app.
