Reminiscence Therapy

Reminiscence Therapy, also known as RT, is a multi-sensory treatment that involves discussing past activities, events, and experiences with the help of tangible prompts to improve a person's psychological well-being. While it is a staple in dementia and geriatric care, its core principles apply to anyone looking to strengthen their sense of self through the story of their life.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains that reminiscence goes beyond remembering. It involves sharing life experiences to enhance psychological well-being.

Making it Sensory

The article says that memories aren't just data points; they're full-body experiences. When facts and dates start to get fuzzy with cognitive decline, our sensory hardware, smell, touch and sound usually stay sharp. My prototype can't just be a flat screen; it needs to be a sensory trigger. I need to look into how a specific latch click or the grain of the wood can trigger the brain before the user even sees a photo or item.

Memories are Alive

Reminiscing is a way for people to make sense of their own existence. Revisiting old memories helps people tie up loose ends and find a sense of peace with life’s work.

Can the app let people add new chapters as they grow? I want to look into Life Review Therapy to see how this box can help users evolve alongside their memories, rather than just hoarding them.

Memory as a social tool

The Alzheimer’s Association states that remembering is actually a team sport. It’s a way to kill off the isolation that often hits us as we get older or deal with hard times. Talking about the past builds a bridge between people, like a grandchild and a grandparent, giving them a shared language that they can relate to.

I’m going to look into Joint Attention, ****the science of how two people bonding over one physical object can create a massive emotional spark.
